Rescued from behind enemy lines: Russian pilot who was feared captured by Syrian rebels after his jet was shot down by Turkey is 'alive and well' after dramatic 12-hour mission to save him
Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed that one of the
two pilots who ejected from the downed jet is now in the care of the
Syrian army and has been taken to Russia's base there. Putin's
statement came after Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told Russian news
agencies that the pilot, identified on Twitter as Aleksandr Akhmadulin,
is now 'safe and sound' at the air base. The details of how the second
pilot ended up in the hands of the Syrian army - not to be confused with
rebel group Free Syrian Army - are still unclear, but Mr Shoigu said he
was rescued in a 12-hour operation which ended in the early hours on
Wednesday. Meanwhile, a recording has emerged of the Turkish army
warning the Russian military jet that it was violating its airspace
before shooting it down. A voice can be heard telling the Russian pilots
that they are approaching Turkish airspace, telling them to change
their course immediately.
