Devastation of Desmond: Army called in as floods wreak havoc across Cumbria and Scotland. David Cameron said Army officers had been mobilised to help those affected by the flooding, as water levels continued to rise today. Military personnel had to be brought in to help deal with severe weather in Carlisle as elderly people, children and pets were pulled from their homes. One elderly woman was carried from her flooded home in the city by an officer (bottom left), as a man climbed down ladders from the first floor of his property this morning with help from the Mountain Rescue (bottom right). Cars and houses were submerged in a street in Carlisle (top) as Storm Desmond brought severe disruption to areas of northern England. APC polled 247,752 votes to defeat PDP who came second with 204,877 votes. In the supplementary poll, APC polled 6885 votes to beat PDP which polled 5363 votes. Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi who is the Chief Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Emmanuel Kucha declared the results in Lokoja.
