Devastation of Desmond: Army called in as floods wreak havoc across Cumbria and Scotland.
David Cameron said Army officers had been mobilised to help
those affected by the flooding, as water levels continued to rise today.
Military personnel had to be brought in to help deal with severe
weather in Carlisle as elderly people, children and pets were pulled
from their homes. One elderly woman was carried from her flooded home in
the city by an officer (bottom left), as a man climbed down ladders
from the first floor of his property this morning with help from the
Mountain Rescue (bottom right). Cars and houses were submerged in a
street in Carlisle (top) as Storm Desmond brought severe disruption to
areas of northern England. More than 1,000 people have been evacuated
from houses in Cumbria and the Scottish borders and the Environment
Agency has issued 186 flood warnings across Britain.
